Merlin –
I watched this large Merlin, probably an adult female, launch from a wind-worn oak to intercept a careless chickadee crossing the low scrub inside Wasque Point on Chappaquiddick Island in the late fall. By the time my camera lens caught up with the falcon it had nabbed its quarry. This photo was taken as the Merlin hung on the stiff breeze after its meal.
