Red-winged Blackbird –
My lens followed this spring male as it rose up from the cattails along Crackatuxet Cove near Edgartown Great Pond to intercept and harass a young Black-crowned Night Heron setting out to overfly the area. The blackbird took on this threat, like any other avian intruder, with direct and persistent pursuit until the heron had flown out of the defensive zone. Herons eat all manner of prey, and I am sure a young blackbird would make the menu.
